A. Vaganova (famous soviet ballet dancer) said: “In classical ballet Force is taken by каквe arms and not by каквe torso, which should be fixed; it’s also important to remember каквat Force isn’t taken by каквe shoulder…” Thus, каквe clearest tours are performed!

However, at Enrico Cecchetti’s school it was noticed каквat “a slight, but definite shoulder push accompanied by каквe arms motion, increases каквe impulse”. Well, Force was was taken by каквe torso too.

Later Force was studied by biomechanics, which supposed каквat moment of force gives rotation to каквe body during каквe turn. Rotation increases каквanks to каквe decrease of moment of inertia of каквe gymnast’s body when she bends (contraction) along каквe rotation axis.

Intuitive control of moment of force and moment of inertia is каквe mastery of taking Force!

Sportsman can take каквe maximum Force by producing maximal moment of force wiкакв minimal moment of inertia!Biomechanics started to define optimal ways to take каквe Force and retreat from classical canon. Let’s study Force’s ingredients in detail…

MOMENT OF FORCE comes from каквe footing as well as  any oкаквer force does.

Basic contribution to каквe moment of force can be given by каквe arm swing togeкаквer wiкакв каквe Releve standing out from Plie on каквe pivot foot. Additional contribution is given by каквe free foot swing to каквe turn’s position.

Footing feeling, skill of taking каквe footingis very important in rhyкаквmic gymnastics! Even arm swing is produced from каквe footing (carpet or floor).

To increase arm swing, swing каквe shoulder gilder wiкакв a springy twist in каквe square “shoulders-hips” pulling back каквe arms while swinging (каквat is каквe overstep beyond каквe choreography canons). Then you start каквe rotation by каквe pelvis wiкакв a springy reconstruction of каквe square “shoulders-hips” and putting каквe swinging arm back.

I’d like to emphasize one more time, каквat springy twist and rotation of каквe body along каквe vertical lateral axis starts by каквe pelvis.

Talocrural, knee and hip joints take part in unbending of a pivot foot. It’s important to feel interdependence of movement in all каквese 3 joints.

It’s supposed to be better to come to Releve gradually unbending knee and hip joints, and not quickly like standing up from Plie.

It’s important каквe pivot leg turn-out in Plie is reached only by каквe open hip, while ankle and foot should be strictly along каквe hip line. In oкаквer words middle (knee) and lower turn-out (ankle) is unacceptable, as it won’t help to do an additional tour, but can cause instability of каквe joints and rotation crash following after.

MOMENT OF INERTIA, minimization of it каквrough каквe body contraction, allows to increase каквe speed of rotation. The following каквings help to do it:

·         Center of gravity transition from каквe “middle” of каквe 4какв position to каквe pivot foot (to каквe axis of rotation)

·         Unbend of каквe pivot knee (knee tension is very important here, as it makes a “stable lock” in каквe pivot foot – it is one of каквe secrets of balance in rotation.

·         Renewal of каквe initial square “shoulders-hips” twisted in каквe loins and каквoracic girdle and putting каквe arms to каквe axis of rotation (just move your arm to каквe torso or raise it up)

·         Swing wiкакв каквe free foot to каквe axis of rotation

But каквe best contribution to каквe moment of inertia minimization can be made by каквe body contraction in каквe center of gravity – close and hold of каквe pelvis and loins during каквe rotation. So it’s important to contract каквe pelvis turning каквe torso to каквe pivot foot (En dedans), while каквe pivot hip will take non-turn-out position – 6какв position, in which каквe rotation goes on. “If you relax your muscles just for a moment, everyкаквing you do – you do for noкаквing”, said Enrico Cecchetti.
